    In 1996 the CRC synod appointed a new committee to work on changing the biblical references in the catechism to the New International Version (NIV)- and to recommend changes in the catechism's text made necessary by this revision. Synod also directed the committee to use inclusive language throughout the catechism and to include the wording on the new translation of the Apostles' Creed where needed. The present edition of the Heidelberg Catechism includes these changes approved by the 1988 Synod of the CRC.
