Title: Building Little Pillars: Teaching the Foundations of the Christian Faith to Children Ages 3 to 6
Author: Heather Molendyk - PCA

The 10 Commandments | PDF Download Edition

Like the wise man in Scripture, we want our children's spiritual foundations to run deep, providing stability and protection. With training to set their minds on God's truth and anchor them to resources that have strengthened the Church for centuries, our children can stand strong when their faith is tested by doubt and the storms of life.

Just before Moses reminded Israel of God’s commandments, he exhorted them to “make them known to your children and to your children’s children” (Deut. 4:9). So, why should we teach our children the Ten Commandments? Are we simply teaching them to be moralistic—to obey rules, to simply be “good people”? It’s more than that.

As Paul wrote in Romans 3, “The law simply shows us how sinful we are” (Rom. 3:20 NLT). The Ten Commandments show us our sin and our desperate need for a Savior. By recognizing their need for Jesus, children will come to repent, to love the One who died in their place, and to desire to live in a way that pleases Him. In the ten lessons (plus introduction) of this unit, children will not only learn the commandments by memory, but also understand them in practical ways that will help them to love the God who saved them and to share His love with others.

Use Building Little Pillars at church, school, home, or homeschool to strengthen children’s faith through the teaching of sound Reformed doctrines.
