Beneath the Cross: The Collection provides the readings and structures for five moving and sacred Good Friday services based on the four Gospels and the Seven Last Words of Christ.

The repetition of three elements—Scripture, story, and song—poignantly retells the crucifixion events recorded in the Gospels.

Within this series, the Scripture readings focus on the Passion narratives from the four Gospels, including the words of Christ.

The story readings represent people we find in the Bible who knew and encountered Jesus. The narratives focus on the personal interactions these individuals had with Jesus, the way we each would recall personal memories of a loved one who has died. Their experiences are remembered in light of the events of Good Friday.

The songs (seven to nine pieces) are choral/musical responses to the specific Scriptures and stories and are a powerful element of the service. Specific songs are suggested but are at the discretion of the Music Director to meet the needs of the congregation, singers, and setting.

The five services included:
- Kingdom Blessings, based on the Beatitudes and the Passion narrative in the Gospel of Matthew
- The Way of the Lord, based on encounters with Jesus and the Passion narrative in Gospel of Mark
- Thy Kingdom Come, based on the Lord’s Prayer and the Passion narrative in the Gospel of Luke
- Light into Darkness, based on the “I Am” statements and the Passion narrative in the Gospel of John.
- Beneath the Cross, based on the Seven Last Words of Christ from across the Gospels.
