Lead My Sheep: A Guide for Training Elders and Deacons
Author: Jonathan Stoddard - PCA

Pastors are not only called to lead the flocks Christ gives them, but also to intentionally and thoughtfully train good leaders within those flocks. The health of a church cannot rise above the health of its Session and Diaconate. Biblically guided leadership is essential to a thriving pastoral ministry.

Based on his popular General Assembly workshop, Jon Stoddard, has written Lead My Sheep: A Guide for Training Elders and Deacons to assist pastors in preparing men for these offices. In this book, Stoddard lays out the foundations for church leadership, exploring the purpose, jobs, and responsibilities of elders and deacons. Next, the heart of the book is a template for pastors to develop a training plan to fit their particular contexts. And in the final section, are basic principles and practices for wise, biblical leadership.

“I cannot recommend this more highly than to say that I will be adding this to our own officer training program.” – Dr. Sean Michael Lucas, Independent Presbyterian Church, Memphis TN

“This is one book I’ll be putting in the hands of my students.” – Dr. Alfred Poirier, Westminster Theological Seminary

“The appendices alone are worth the price of the book, but the content is worth its weight in gold.” – Richard Burguet, New Hope Presbyterian Church, Eustis, FL

Jonathan Stoddard is pastor of Jordan Valley Church PCA in West Jordan, Utah. He has led the church through a replant and seen God bring a beautiful renewal to the church. Before a call to ministry, he spent eight years in the Marines as both enlisted and an officer. He has a particular interest in issues around church leadership, structure, and training pastors. Jonathan loves biking, backpacking, and being in the mountains. He’s married to Lisa, a nurse practitioner, and they have four children.

Jon Stoddard's work on leadership development and officer training in the context of the local church has been an indispensable help to me for years. His thoughtfulness and care in bringing together biblical and theological foundations, a structured road map, and practical principles for pastoral leadership and ordained service in the church is evident in Lead My Sheep. What you will find in these pages is a mature, faithful, and useful guide to putting together (or improving) your church's program for discipling leaders who are qualified, equipped, and competent to serve Christ in an ordained capacity. Stoddard's three-phase approach to leadership development in general, and officer training in particular, is simple: assess, teach, and train. All three phases are thoroughly grounded in biblical precept and example. The emphasis on character and vocational assessment is particularly valuable and must be present in any Christian church worthy of the name. Anyone who puts this material to use will find that God's Word is clear and sufficient for the ordained servant who seeks diligently to show himself "approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed" (2 Tim. 2:15). I heartily recommend this resource in conjunction with Timothy Witmer's The Shepherd Leader. Christian pastors and church officers of all denominational stripes will find this material valuable, but it helpfully applies especially to men serving in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), which makes it uniquely useful to my closest colleagues and me.
