Title: Building Little Pillars: Teaching the Foundations of the Christian Faith to Children Ages 3 to 6
Author: Heather Molendyk - PCA

Like the wise man in Scripture, we want our children's spiritual foundations to run deep, providing stability and protection. With training to set their minds on God's truth and anchor them to resources that have strengthened the Church for centuries, our children can stand strong when their faith is tested by doubt and the storms of life.

Building Little Pillars equips them with strong supports! Through Bible memory, Bible stories, hands-on learning, and life applications of spiritual truths found in the Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer, Building Little Pillars lays a firm foundation for covenant children as they begin their journey of faith.

Use Building Little Pillars at church, school, home, or homeschool to strengthen children’s faith through the teaching of sound Reformed doctrines.

Heather Molendyk holds a degree in elementary education from the University of Miami. She has worked with children of all ages as a classroom teacher, camp counselor, Vacation Bible School director, Sunday school teacher, nursery coordinator, homeschool mom, enrichment teacher, and as part of a church-plant leadership team. Heather currently worships and serves with her husband and four children at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, NC.

I ordered this book when I volunteered to take the responsibility of Junior Church for my home church -Edgemont PCA. I thought The Apostles’ Creed, 10 Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer-surely my Session would approve this book. And they did. But I was really thinking-how can the kids get into the Apostles’ Creed? It’ll be so dry for them. After you say it over and over for years-it gets to be something I was saying, but not really thinking about. Well-enter (not so) RUDE AWAKENING! The Creed has become alive again for Me-a 69 y/o grandma. I began, as I was teaching this, to see all the parts of the Creed that I had been saying for years. I never thought about what it meant to say “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of Heaven and earth.” Heather brought in the story of creation and made it come alive for me and for my little kids in Jr Church. She has a Mystery Bag suggestion for each Sunday, which the kids love! They take turns holding my Mystery Bag that I made, and guessing what was in it. Heather also has a couple of activities that she includes for each week with detailed instructions for completion. “My” kids have enjoyed coloring, cutting out, pasting and all the other activities that are suggested. I added some things by making up my own resource box-construction paper, card stock, Play Doh, I even reverted to flannelgraph and turned her ideas to a hand-on approach to some of the stories included in her lessons. Heather has provided a great base for those interested in teaching kids God’s truths to work from to stimulate young minds toward thinking about God. I highly recommend Heather Molendyk’s book Building Little Pillars for use in Sunday School or Junior Church. I’ve just ordered her new book Lead Me to Zion so that I can get it approved for our continued study. Thanks so much to Heather and her help with the provision of this fantastic material for our little ones.
