Lisa Wallover - PCA

Light into Darkness provides the readings and structure for a moving and sacred Good Friday Tenebrae service. The repetition of three elements—Scripture, story, and song—poignantly retell the crucifixion events recorded in the Gospel of John. The gradual dimming of lights and extinguishing of candles throughout the service creates a meaningful atmosphere for thought and reflection.

The Scripture readings include the passages surrounding the deeply significant “I Am” statements of Christ recorded by the apostle John, as well as his descriptions leading us through the events that begin in the Upper Room and end at the sealed tomb.

The story readings are from the perspective of the twelve disciples on the first Good Friday night (Judas Iscariot’s from the perspective of Thursday night); the crucifixion has occurred, but not yet the resurrection. These men are in a place of darkness and confusion, and we enter that with them.

The songs (seven to nine pieces) are choral/musical responses to the specific Scriptures and stories and are a powerful element of the service. Musical selections are suggested.

Twelve Readers (12 men representing the 12 disciples)
Reading Time (without music): 15-20 minutes
Musical Selections are suggested.

I love the tenebrae services that Lisa Wallover has created. I have been a participant (either as a reader, singing in the choir, or as choir director) in each of these Good Friday services at our church. I appreciate the fact that the services are centered on the gospel in a way that impacts the whole person. The combination of scripture, song, and dramatic readings are really something special. Also, as a musician, I am grateful that this service can be customized musically, based on the choir’s ability and resources. The services have helped me experience the gospel in a way that impacted both my reason and my emotions. They have become a staple in our church’s preparation to celebrate Easter each year. I would highly
recommend them to any church!
